How to Freeze Cabbage to Make Sure It Lasts for Months

Can Cabbage Be Freezed?


Cabbage can absolutely be frozen. In reality, you may ensure that cabbage lasts for at least a few months by properly freezing it. However, there are only a few easy procedures to take in order to effectively freeze cabbage. This will ensure that you have a plentiful supply of cabbage that is equally as flavorful and fresh as the day you originally purchased it.

Sharp chef’s knife
Cutting board
Large pot or Dutch oven
Tongs or slotted spoon
Ice
Large zip-top freezer bags


Tips for Freezing Cabbage

On a chopping board, cut the cabbage into quarters before freezing. Then, “shock” the cabbage by placing it in a dish of ice water after blanching it for about a minute. Then, place the cooled and dried cabbage in large freezer bags with zipper tops. This is the procedure.

Put the stem-side of any green or red cabbage you’re using on the chopping board. From top to bottom, halve the cabbage. Slice each cabbage half into quarters, placing the cut side down on the cutting board.

Half of a big saucepan or Dutch oven should be filled with water. Over high heat, rapidly bring to a boil. Fill a big dish with ice water halfway in the meantime. Place aside.

Place the cabbage quarters into the boiling water with caution. Boil the cabbage for no more than 90 seconds, but no less than 60. With tongs or a slotted spoon, transfer the cabbage quarters to the bowl of ice water to stop cooking for at least a minute.

Transfer the cabbage quarters to a cutting board or plate after removing them from the ice water. Utilize paper towels to dry. (At this stage, if preferred, you can also remove the stem and core and use a mandoline to shred the cabbage or chop it into small slices.)
